March 2023 news

March rides and socials

Sonia led a ride from Station South in Levenshulme to Tatton Park. Its a pretty flat route with a very short but steep hill, though definitely doable. Sadly no there were no cruffins left at Station South after Zach had bigged them up all morning 😪.

Simons Bridge, Didsbury

Several Rainbow Riders have now signed up to tackle a couple of the routes in the Tour De Manc so Zach led a slightly longer training ride  to tackle the Old Brickworks climb in the Peak District. The snowy views on top of the hills were definitely worth the effort!

The Christie’s Manchester to Blackpool charity ride

A few Rainbow riders have signed up to take part in the 60 mile charity cycle from Manchester to Blackpool on Sunday 09 July 2023. We’ve currently picked a 9am start but we can flex this to suit the group.

The ride is suitable for Road/Hybrid/Mountain bikes and the event organisers put on transport for you and your bike back to Salford afterwards (at a small cost).

We have a team name registered already so why not sign up and register as part of the Rainbow Riders – LGBTQ+ cycling team, we can ride together if you want the extra support or power on and do your own ride.

Dutch touring holiday

Join us in August for our first touring holiday. We’re not planing a huge cycle fest, but there are a couple of longer days to ensure we get to see some great parts of The Netherlands.

Accommodation will be a group airbnb in Zandvoort/Haarlem, followed by 4 person en-suite rooms in Stayokay hostels in Amsterdam (2 nights), Utrecht (2 nights) and Rotterdam (1 night).

While we want to get to each location with time to relax and enjoy the sites, the journey and the sights along the way form a huge part of a cycle tour, so we wont be smashing it from place to place.

There are 12 spaces and they’re filling up fast so check out our Ronde Van Nederland page for more detail on the routes and accommodation and sign up for the tour on Spond

We’re skipping April’s First Friday Frolic

We had another good turn out at the First Friday Frolic in March, but as the next social would be the Friday of the long Bank Holiday weekend, we’ve decided to give it a miss in April.

The next Friday Frolic will be Friday, 5th May, We’ll meet from 7pm, upstairs at The Molly House, Richmond Street, Manchester.

March’s First Friday Frolic at The Molly House

Theatre trip

The fourth show in The Altrincham Garrick’s season of LGBTQ+ stories is Pronoun, A love story about transition, testosterone, and James Dean.

Rainbow Riders are attending on 26th April, and like last time this is an open invitation to anyone that might like to come along, just book yourself a ticket, and we’ll meet in the bar beforehand for a drink/chat.

Thanks and see you soon,

February 2023 news

February rides

Bex led a group on a nice flat ride out to Media City and back via the Man Utd stadium and 8 billion fans, which was an unexpected turn of events but quite a laugh.

There was a slightly hillier and longer ride on 19th February. It was more of a road based ride heading out toward Oldham and back through Alt and Park Bridge.

There was some distant views of Hartshead Pike and some much needed downhills following a climb up Chamber Road in Oldham.

Check out Cheryl’s shiny new wheels!

Our upcoming events are now on Spond

We’ve tried facebook events and eventbrite but after a bit of research we’ve decided to use Spond. Its an app for sports clubs, however if you don’t want to use the dedicated app and receive notifications for upcoming events, you can get invites by email or text direct instead.

We think this will be easier sharing through different social media accounts etc. We really appreciate your patience while we have been getting to grips with things!

Tour de Manc

Some Rainbow Riders have signed ome Rainbow Riders have signed up to take part in the Tour De Manc on Sunday 30 April 2023.

Routes range from The Northern Quarter, a 50km route to the Mad Manc, an eye watering 200km ride covering all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester.

It is really well organised with great food stops along the way. Check out the routes and sign up.

First Friday Frolic on 3rd March

There were a couple of Rainbow Riders at the First Friday Frolic in February (way too much alliteration though). Our next one will be on Friday, 3rd March, We’ll meet from 7pm at The Molly House, Richmond Street in Manchester’s Gay Village.

Theatre trip

The third show in The Altrincham Garrick’s season of LGBTQ+ stories is The Laramie Project, and if you remember your LGBTQ+ history this is sure to be very moving play.

Rainbow Riders are attending on Thursday 23rd March, and like last time this is an open invitation to anyone that might like to come along, just book yourself a ticket, and meet in the bar beforehand for a drink/chat.

Thanks and see you soon,

Moving our events to Spond

We’ve moved our event hosting to Spond, a dedicated social/sports event hosting system.

We’ve been using eventbrite to list rides and cross-posting these on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook etc but we are aware that not everyone uses some of these social media sites.

We’ve done some research and we are going to advertise our rides through Spond, a sports club app and website, you don’t actually need to download the app if you dont wan’t to as the events are sent by email or text too.

With immediate effect we’ll be posting events and socials on Spond and you can sign up to events there. Events sync with our calendar which lists all future events and can be seen on our home page.

Access Spond here: https://group.spond.com/PLTJC

Thank you for your patience while we determined the method

December 2022 news

December rides and our first No Bike Needed Social

Due to the freezing cold weather, we had to cancel the December ride to Tatton Park, but this has now been rescheduled for Saturday 7th January 2023.

Bex came to the rescue and squeezed a nice 11 miler in on Sunday 18th December for a couple of us still braving the chilly and mostly wet conditions. The cakes (and beer) were very much needed.

Its Christmas!!!

Ten riders came for the Christmas social, our first no bike needed social, at The Cockatoo Lounge in the village, where Lola Lasagne was performing.

See our No Bike Needed socials below for details of a regular night out and a theatre trip.

Zwift training and virtual rides

The Venn diagram for LGBTQ+, Cylcists and Zwifters is probably pretty small and we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel by creating a specific Rainbow Riders for a small number of people when group riding is one of the best features of Zwift.

We’ve been invited to join the UK LGBTQ+ Zwift Team, open to the UK LGBTQ+ cycling community, the team is made up of Zwifters from Out Velo, CycleOut London, LDN Riders, PRiDE OUT, OutdoorLads, and Rainbow Riders.

Virtual social rides are held every Tuesday at 19:30 along with other rides too, you can join the Zwift chat on Discord.

Theatre trip

The Altrincham Garrick is hosting a season of LGBTQ+ stories and the next play in the line up is the Tony Award winning Love! Valour! Compassion!

Some Rainbow Riders are attending on Thursday 02 February, and its an open invitation to anyone that might like to come along, just book yourself a ticket.

First Friday Frolics

A little regularity can make things easier to plan, as such we thought we’d make a no bike needed social on the first Friday of each month.

Beginning Friday 3rd February we’ll be meeting up from 7pm. We’re just confirming the best location, do you have any suggestions for a venue?

Have a great Christmas and here’s to riding with you in 2023!
