Ride With Pride: Tips for New LGBTQIA+ Cyclists

Starting cycling as an LGBTQIA+ rider can feel like a daunting challenge – a mix of excitement and nervousness, especially if you’re not sure where you fit in. I’ve been there. The good news? You’re not alone, and there’s a whole rainbow of riders out there cheering you on.

It’s easy to feel like cycling is for “serious” people with flashy bikes and tiny shorts – but that’s nonsense. If you ride, you’re a cyclist and we believe everyone should have the freedom to ride as their full, authentic self. End of story.

So whether you’re dusting off an old bike, or polishing a full carbon frame, cycling solo or thinking about joining your first group ride, here are a few things I’ve learned that might help you find your confidence and your community on two wheels:

You belong… on the road, the trail, the towpath, in the front or at the back, everywhere!

It is easy to feel out of place when you’re just starting out, especially if you don’t see others like you around. But the truth is: there’s no one “type” of cyclist. Whether you’re rocking Lycra, baggy shorts, glitter and sequins; cleats or trainers; pedal power or electric assist – your ride is valid. You deserve safe, joyful spaces to move your body, explore the city and green spaces and connect with others.

Start small and build up at your pace

Confidence grows with time – and miles. Start with short, familiar routes: around your neighbourhood, through your local park, or along a canal path. In Manchester, the Fallowfield Loop, Bridgewater Canal, and even routes through Alexandra Park are great low-stress starting points.

Build your confidence one pedal stroke at a time. If traffic makes you anxious – and we’ve all been there – ride during quieter hours, plan your route in advance, or buddy up with someone experienced if you can.

Community makes all the difference

The best part of cycling for me has always been the people. Riding with an LGBTQIA+ or inclusive group can transform the whole experience. You’re not just out for exercise – you’re part of something bigger.

That’s why we started @RainbowRidersUK in Manchester: to create a safe, friendly space where LGBTQIA+ riders could show up exactly as they are and ride without pressure or pretence. Look for LGBTQIA+ cycling groups like ours, or inclusive clubs in your area.

Many of us started unsure too, but we found joy in riding together. Whether you’re fast or slow, new or experienced, nervous or curious – there’s a place for you at our starting line.

Ask questions, share stories

Everyone was new once. Everyone had a “first ride”. Everyone has been the person Googling how to fix a puncture at some point. Don’t be shy about asking what to bring on a ride, how to dress for the weather, or what snacks work best (answer: all of them).

You’ll find that most riders are more than happy to share what they’ve learned – and you’ll soon have your own tips to pass on before long.

Celebrate your wins

Every ride counts – your first ride, your first time clipping in without falling over, your first hill, your first group ride. Even your first time turning up when you didn’t quite feel like it. Celebrate those moments. They’re proof of your growth.

Take pride in your progress. You’re doing something brilliant for your mental and physical wellbeing, and for visibility in the cycling world.

Come ride with us

We’re proud to be part of a growing movement making cycling safer, queerer, and more joyful in a world that doesn’t always make room for queerness.

If you’re in or near Manchester and looking for a chilled, inclusive group to ride with, @RainbowRidersUK runs regular social rides with all-levels welcome. No judgment, no drop, no gatekeeping – just good people and good vibes on bikes.

And if you’re not in Manchester, check out local LGBTQIA+ or women/non-binary cycling collectives. You might be surprised how many are out there – and how welcoming they are:
• @queersonwheels_
• @queer_cycle_crew
• @queercyclingbristol
• @ladypedal
• @outvelo
• @peakqueeradventures

Until then – ride proud. 🚴🏽‍♂️🌈💪

Chickens, eggs and committees and constitutions

TLDR: We started a club in October 2022 and completed tasks like creating a calendar of events, designing a logo, and making t-shirts. Now we want to grow the club. We’ve published our constitution on Spond and invited all members to a virtual AGM at 7pm on Monday 4 December 2023 . If you’re interested in joining the committee, please nominate yourself or second someone by Sunday 3 December 2023. Only those present at the AGM can vote.

What came first the chicken or the egg? its an age old question and one that probably wont be answered, certainly not by me. but what is the connection to the Rainbow Riders? Constitutions, Committees and AGMs thats what.

In May 2023, we invited all existing members to a club set up meeting and figure out where we wanted to go in our first year. Out of the 30 riders in the group at the time, 10 of us took part in the online meeting. from this we formed a steering group (not quite on a committee level) with a game plan in mind. Here’s what we set out to achieve:

  • Create a calendar of events (rides, socials and third party events like Tour De Manc)
  • Update the website
  • Increase our social media presence
  • Create a fully designed logo and a club t-shirt for socials and events
  • Open a bank account (to apply for funding, and pay for things like logo/t-shirt designs etc).
  • Write a constitution and ride leader policies.

Like Jay from The Inbetweeners, we’ve “completed it mate” and now it’s time for the Rainbow Riders to move on to the next stage of growth. The constitution, which has been approved by the steering group, includes several committee roles:

  • Chairperson: Provides advice and guidance to the committee, acts as a sounding board for ideas, and has the deciding vote in case of a tie.
  • Secretary: Oversees the running of the club, handles paperwork, organizes meetings, deals with membership inquiries, and manages administrative tasks.
  • Treasurer: Manages the accounts and ensures responsible spending to avoid financial difficulties. Works with the Secretary on collecting membership fees.
  • Inclusivity and Safeguarding Officer: Ensures the club remains inclusive and provides support for members’ well-being and safeguarding. Can be held by multiple committee or club members after completing a safeguarding course.
  • Ride and Events Coordinator: Organizes rides, including special events like Pride, and coordinates with Ride Leaders.

These roles are essential for the smooth functioning and growth of the Rainbow Riders.

We are inviting all members to join our first official AGM. We are looking for interested individuals to nominate themselves for a role on the committee. Once the committee is formed, the wider steering group will be dissolved. We will provide regular updates on plans and finances to ensure transparency in our club.

The date for our first AGM has been set for Monday 4 December 2023. If you wish to nominate yourself or second a member for a role, please submit your nomination by Sunday 3 December. Remember, only those present at the AGM can vote.

NB. one thing you will notice in the constitution, the mention of an annual membership fee. so far those who joined the steering group donated some funds to cover things like insurance etc.

We don’t plan on introducing membership fee any time soon, as we hope to apply for some grant funding from the hundreds of places out there supporting green transport, sport and exercise as well as those supporting the LGBTQ community, but we are conscious that there is a small amount of money required to run things in the background for websites, domain names and public liability insurance.

Manchester Pride 2023

The August Bank Holiday hosted the annual Manchester Pride, the City’s largest parade and this year The Rainbow Riders had a space to cycle/walk in the parade! It was a vibrant and colorful event, filled with joy, celebration, and a strong sense of unity.

A group of 6 enthusiastic Rainbow Riders took part in the parade, pedaling their way through the streets, waving colorful flags high in the air and wearing specially-designed t-shirts, proudly displaying their support for the LGBTQ+ community. The t-shirts were emblazoned with a bold and powerful message: “Ride with Pride.”

The Rainbow Riders, with their infectious energy and enthusiasm, brought an extra dose of excitement to the parade. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation, joined in the festivities, embracing the spirit of inclusivity and acceptance that Manchester Pride represents.

The atmosphere was electric, with music blasting from speakers, colorful floats gliding down the streets, and people dancing and reveling in the celebration of love and diversity. Manchester Pride is not only a time to honor the progress that has been made in the fight for equality, but also to recognize the ongoing work that still needs to be done.

If you missed out on joining the Rainbow Riders this year, don’t worry! You can still be part of the movement by ordering your very own Ride with Pride t-shirt. By wearing it, you can proudly display your support for LGBTQ+ rights and help spread a message of love, acceptance, and equality. Let’s continue to ride together, united in our quest for a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Check out the video below to catch a glimpse of the excitement and joy that filled the streets during the Manchester Pride parade. It’s a visual reminder of the power of unity and the importance of coming together to celebrate and support one another.

Thanks and see you soon

March 2023 news

March rides and socials

Sonia led a ride from Station South in Levenshulme to Tatton Park. Its a pretty flat route with a very short but steep hill, though definitely doable. Sadly no there were no cruffins left at Station South after Zach had bigged them up all morning 😪.

Simons Bridge, Didsbury

Several Rainbow Riders have now signed up to tackle a couple of the routes in the Tour De Manc so Zach led a slightly longer training ride  to tackle the Old Brickworks climb in the Peak District. The snowy views on top of the hills were definitely worth the effort!

The Christie’s Manchester to Blackpool charity ride

A few Rainbow riders have signed up to take part in the 60 mile charity cycle from Manchester to Blackpool on Sunday 09 July 2023. We’ve currently picked a 9am start but we can flex this to suit the group.

The ride is suitable for Road/Hybrid/Mountain bikes and the event organisers put on transport for you and your bike back to Salford afterwards (at a small cost).

We have a team name registered already so why not sign up and register as part of the Rainbow Riders – LGBTQ+ cycling team, we can ride together if you want the extra support or power on and do your own ride.

Dutch touring holiday

Join us in August for our first touring holiday. We’re not planing a huge cycle fest, but there are a couple of longer days to ensure we get to see some great parts of The Netherlands.

Accommodation will be a group airbnb in Zandvoort/Haarlem, followed by 4 person en-suite rooms in Stayokay hostels in Amsterdam (2 nights), Utrecht (2 nights) and Rotterdam (1 night).

While we want to get to each location with time to relax and enjoy the sites, the journey and the sights along the way form a huge part of a cycle tour, so we wont be smashing it from place to place.

There are 12 spaces and they’re filling up fast so check out our Ronde Van Nederland page for more detail on the routes and accommodation and sign up for the tour on Spond

No Bike Needed socials

We’re skipping April’s First Friday Frolic

We had another good turn out at the First Friday Frolic in March, but as the next social would be the Friday of the long Bank Holiday weekend, we’ve decided to give it a miss in April.

The next Friday Frolic will be Friday, 5th May, We’ll meet from 7pm, upstairs at The Molly House, Richmond Street, Manchester.

March’s First Friday Frolic at The Molly House

Theatre trip

The fourth show in The Altrincham Garrick’s season of LGBTQ+ stories is Pronoun, A love story about transition, testosterone, and James Dean.

Rainbow Riders are attending on 26th April, and like last time this is an open invitation to anyone that might like to come along, just book yourself a ticket, and we’ll meet in the bar beforehand for a drink/chat.

Holiday: Ronde Van Nederlands 2023

Join us on our first touring holiday across The Netherlands 03 August 2023 – 11 August 2023

Fancy a cycle holiday in The Netherlands? We’re not planing a huge cycle fest, but there are a couple of longer days. Accommodation is currently a hotel in Leiden, followed by 4 person en-suite rooms in Stayokay hostels in Amsterdam (2 nights), Utrecht (2 nights) and Rotterdam (1 night).

Depending on filling all 8 spaces the price for all accommodation and return ferry journey will be around £500 (excluding food and drink) sign up on our spond account.

The rough outline for our first touring holiday is to sail overnight on 3rd August from Hull to Rotterdam and cycle at a reasonable and leisurely pace to several destinations. While we want to get to each location with time to relax and enjoy the sites, the journey and the sights along the way form a huge part of a cycle tour, so we wont be smashing it from place to place.

Leiden

Leiden is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland. It’s known for its centuries-old architecture and for Leiden University, the country’s oldest, dating from 1575.

The university houses the Hortus botanicus Leiden Botanical Garden, founded in 1590, where the tulip was introduced to Western Europe. The Museum de Lakenhal displays works by the Dutch Masters including Rembrandt, who was born in Leiden.

Amsterdam

Aiming to leave early in the morning for a short ride to Amsterdam will give us plenty of time to explore as much of this beautiful Capital as possible. Known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.

We plan to stay for two nights giving us virtually two full days in the city and a night to relax and unwind.

Utrecht

Known for its medieval center and tree lined canals, the city is famous for The Treaty of Utrecht, one of the first significant international peace negotiations at the end of the 18th century.

Utrecht is the lively, beating heart of Holland, built around the Dom Tower, a historic bell tower dating back to the 14th century. Utrecht also has a vibrant nightlife.

Rotterdam

After being almost completely reconstructed following WWII, Rotterdam is now known for bold, modern architecture, art-dominated streets. As popular for its vibrant entertainment as it is for its many fine museums, splendid architecture, and maritime tourist attractions.

The Maritime Museum’s vintage ships and exhibits trace the city’s seafaring history. The 17th-century Delfshaven neighborhood is home to canalside shopping and Pilgrim Fathers Church, where pilgrims worshiped before sailing to America.

February 2023 news

February rides

Bex led a group on a nice flat ride out to Media City and back via the Man Utd stadium and 8 billion fans, which was an unexpected turn of events but quite a laugh.

There was a slightly hillier and longer ride on 19th February. It was more of a road based ride heading out toward Oldham and back through Alt and Park Bridge.

There was some distant views of Hartshead Pike and some much needed downhills following a climb up Chamber Road in Oldham.

Check out Cheryl’s shiny new wheels!

Our upcoming events are now on Spond

We’ve tried facebook events and eventbrite but after a bit of research we’ve decided to use Spond. Its an app for sports clubs, however if you don’t want to use the dedicated app and receive notifications for upcoming events, you can get invites by email or text direct instead.

We think this will be easier sharing through different social media accounts etc. We really appreciate your patience while we have been getting to grips with things!

Theatre trip

The third show in The Altrincham Garrick’s season of LGBTQ+ stories is The Laramie Project, and if you remember your LGBTQ+ history this is sure to be very moving play.

Moving our events to Spond

We’ve moved our event hosting to Spond, a dedicated social/sports event hosting system.

We’ve been using eventbrite to list rides and cross-posting these on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook etc but we are aware that not everyone uses some of these social media sites.

We’ve done some research and we are going to advertise our rides through Spond, a sports club app and website, you don’t actually need to download the app if you dont wan’t to as the events are sent by email or text too.

With immediate effect we’ll be posting events and socials on Spond and you can sign up to events there. Events sync with our calendar which lists all future events and can be seen on our home page.

Access Spond here: https://group.spond.com/PLTJC

Thank you for your patience while we determined the method

December 2022 news

December rides and our first No Bike Needed Social

Due to the freezing cold weather, we had to cancel the December ride to Tatton Park, but this has now been rescheduled for Saturday 7th January 2023.

Bex came to the rescue and squeezed a nice 11 miler in on Sunday 18th December for a couple of us still braving the chilly and mostly wet conditions. The cakes (and beer) were very much needed.

Its Christmas!!!

Ten riders came for the Christmas social, our first no bike needed social, at The Cockatoo Lounge in the village, where Lola Lasagne was performing.

See our No Bike Needed socials below for details of a regular night out and a theatre trip.

Zwift training and virtual rides

The Venn diagram for LGBTQ+, Cylcists and Zwifters is probably pretty small and we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel by creating a specific Rainbow Riders for a small number of people when group riding is one of the best features of Zwift.

We’ve been invited to join the UK LGBTQ+ Zwift Team, open to the UK LGBTQ+ cycling community, the team is made up of Zwifters from Out Velo, CycleOut London, LDN Riders, PRiDE OUT, OutdoorLads, and Rainbow Riders.

Virtual social rides are held every Tuesday at 19:30 along with other rides too, you can join the Zwift chat on Discord.

No Bike Needed socials

Theatre trip

The Altrincham Garrick is hosting a season of LGBTQ+ stories and the next play in the line up is the Tony Award winning Love! Valour! Compassion!

Some Rainbow Riders are attending on Thursday 02 February, and its an open invitation to anyone that might like to come along, just book yourself a ticket.

First Friday Frolics

A little regularity can make things easier to plan, as such we thought we’d make a no bike needed social on the first Friday of each month.

Beginning Friday 3rd February we’ll be meeting up from 7pm. We’re just confirming the best location, do you have any suggestions for a venue?

Have a great Christmas and here’s to riding with you in 2023!

Welcome to Manchester’s new LGBTQ+ cycle group

Who are Rainbow Riders?

Rainbow Riders is an LGBTQ+ cycling club in Great Manchester, UK. We welcome everyone regardless of sexuality, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, age, body shape, the bike you ride or your bike ability. We want Rainbow Riders to be a relaxed and social cycling club and hope to offer rides that suit everyone from easy flat rides to something with leg burning climbs so fair weather cyclists and Zwifting, GCN reading, cycle nerds we are here for you! Most importantly we put on rides.

Whats happened so far?

We led a couple of rides in November, and if you only think success is based on the number of bikes, we’ll have to agree to disagree, the metric is quite clearly coffee and cake! So far the Service Course in Wilmslow gives good cake!

A super wet ride to Wilmslow led by Bex

Its Christmas!!!

Love it or loathe it, Christmas is just around the corner, the evenings are dark and the weather is wet, but shake off the winter blues with us on Sunday 11th December on a ride out to Tatton Park

We are having a non bike based Christmas Social in The Cockatoo Lounge, in Manchester’s Gay Village on Thursday 15th December from 7pm so it would be lovely to see you there and have a good time.

christmas bike

Whats coming up?

From January we are going to lead rides on the first Saturday and third Sunday of the month. we hope a regular pattern will help people plan ahead and be able to get to some more rides and if the numbers dictate we will try and add more days.

We know there are some great routes to explore out there and while we will do some trips to areas further afield like the Wirral Coast and Buxton or Bakewell, for the most part we want to focus on rides for the LGBTQ+ cycling community in Greater Manchester. so expect some trips to Bury and Ramsbottom as well as Stockport and Mosley

Thanks and see you soon,
